Desmond has over three decades of experience in various leadership roles within the public and private sectors. His academic credentials include a Postgraduate Diploma in Labour Law from the University of Johannesburg (UJ), a Certificate in Practical Labour Law from the University of Cape Town (UCT), a BTech Degree in Human Resource Management from CUT’s Free State Campus, an NDip in HRM & Practices from Maccauvlei Learning Academy, and a National Certificate in HRM & Practices from the same institution. He completed his secondary education at Rauwane Sepeng High School in 1987.

Desmon’s career commenced in 1988 at Anglo Platinum – Precious Metal Refiners, where he began as a Process Controller. His leadership capabilities saw him elected to serve as the Regional Health & Safety Secretary from 2000 to 2005, and as the Regional Secretary and NEC Member from 2006 to 2009, and again from 2015 to 2017.
